Considering the furnace is 24 years old, we suggest replacing it soon. For now, they have heating. It wasn't a faulty sensor; rather, the sensor functioned as intended. Gas was leaking into the furnace without igniting, creating a hazardous condition. We disassembled the burners, cleaned the heat exchanger, and opened the gas orifices. This gives them time to gather funds for a replacement.
